Invest in YOUR Community

Catholic Schools build upon a proud past, a commitment to faith formation, a values-based education, and universal respect as they anticipate a promising future. Most importantly a Catholic school approaches education of the whole child: mind, body, and spirit. We believe every student should have the choice for a Catholic education and with your support we will secure that right for every child. As an Iowa taxpayer, you can contribute to the Our Faith, Our Children, Our Future School Tuition Organization and receive an Iowa tax credit equal to 65% of your donation. The amount you contribute also qualifies as a charitable donation on your federal tax return. Support your community and invest in Catholic education. Give today at www.arch.pvt.k12.ia.us or call 563-556-2580 ext 256.

Youth Flood Clean Up

The Office of Youth Ministry is coordinating a work camp for high school students (over 14) to help flood victims in Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities during the week of August 11-15. The event will be totally free except for transportation costs (meals, lodging, and materials will be provided). Groups interested in helping can volunteer for any duration of the week, from one day to all week. There is a limit of 200 people per night, so registrations for overnight groups will be accepted at a first come, first serve basis. All parishes in the archdiocese are encouraged to try to bring a group to help for at least part of the week. Each group will need to provide two adult chaperons for the first six teens, and one for every additional six teens. Those interested please call Barb Kuebler at 515-290-4799.

OPEN YOUR HEART AND HOME

to a German, Korean or Brazilian exchange student for the coming 2008/2009 school year. Caring host families (with or without children) as well as single parents are needed to provide food, a bed and a loving home for one or two semesters starting in late August. EMF students have medical insurance, spending money for their personal expenses and expect to share their host family’s daily life including household responsibilities. They speak English, are well-screened and eager to experience life in America. Their stay here is sponsored and supervised by EMF (Educational Merit Foundation), a non-profit, educational exchange program. it is not too late to apply. For more information on EMF students, please call Marie-Claude Dijoud now at 1-800-467-8363 or visit our web site at www.emfusa.org

The International Catholic Stewardship Council Conference will be held in the Midwest, October 12- 15, at Chicago. Given the close proximity, it would be a wonderful opportunity to attend. The Archdiocese has become a member of ICSC, permitting reduced rates for people of the Archdiocese when purchasing materials or when registering for ICSC events. Check out the ICSC website for registration information and a description of presentations and workshops at https://www.catholicstewardship.org. Reduced rates for early registration can be obtained through July 15, 2008. Individuals can register directly on-line and check "member". If you are planning to register, you are asked to email Lois Thilmany (DBQCDev). We will compile a list of registrants from the Archdiocese and email at a later date to help coordinate transportation.

Bible Quiz

This week’s questions:

1. As Catholics, we can always go to a priest to confess our sins. We will receive absolution from the priest. This is truly wonderful! However, do you know of any sin that cannot be forgiven?

2. What exactly is it to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit?
